Alabama Engagement, Wedding Formals Inspired by a Kardashian Cards

This glam photo is a great inspiration for wedding parties, family formals, even engagement photos.

We here at Daniel Taylor Photography are not huge Kardashian fans, but they’ve inspired us with their super-glam Christmas card this year. I think Birmingham brides can find plenty of  do’s here that will work for engagement photos, wedding family formals or group wedding party photographs. The only don’t is, don’t let your photographer leave part of a piece of white metal. Check out the upper right corner of the K card. Less than a minute more of Photoshopping would have made this a perfect Do.

1. Spiff it up! Not everyone wants a red-carpet wardrobe, but putting on dressier clothes for a special occasion photo is well worth it. In your lifetime, there will be hundreds of photos of you wearing jeans and khakis. If you’re having professional photos made, make a little effort. Consider spending $150 to have your hair and make-up done. I guarantee you the Kardashians did.

2. Incorporate color. Notice how peach is a recurring theme in the otherwise neutral color palette. It’s in shirts, dresses and ties. And that pop of green is gorgeous, without clashing.

3. Choose an architecturally interesting location with height and elbow room. An angled staircase is wonderful, especially when you use the space to the right of it for a more horizontal plane.

4. Scrap the Olan Mills poses. Notice how none of the men have folded their hands over in the famous male privacy stance.  Here, family members are facing the camera, angled left, angled right and seated. Some are holding the rail, others aren’t. Hand in the pocket? Absolutely!

Here’s how some of the same principles translated in a September 2010 wedding we photographed at The Oaks Plantation in Pike Road, just outside Montgomery.  This is from Becca and Dusty’s gorgeous Southern wedding.
